Koenigsegg Regera Market Analysis — End of 2023

An analysis by Egg Registry

Hypercars are among the most sought-after cars in the world, and for good reason. They push the boundaries of design and engineering, captivating attention of collectors and fans alike the world over. Part of what defines a hypercar is limited production. This rarity means that not everyone who wants to purchase a given model has the chance to do so, at least new from the factory. Thus, hypercars across all brands have lively resale markets. Hypercars owners may, for a variety of reasons, choose to list their cars for sale. This gives others the rare opportunity to buy what they could not acquire new. This cycle of buying and selling is an indicator of a healthy market, although it does remain a balancing act. This article will explore the current market of the Koenigsegg Regera, as of late December 2023. Our goal is to cover recent sales, current listings, and draw conclusions as to the state of the market.

In our research for this article, we came across a discrepancy between the secondary market for the Koenigsegg Regera and many of its competitors. For sake of comparison to the Regera, we examined the markets for the following (including all of their variants): Koenigsegg Agera, Bugatti Chiron, Pagani Huayra, and McLaren Speedtail. These models were chosen as they occupy a similar market segment and share an approximate price point as the Regera. Our methodology was simple: we divided the number of examples currently for sale by the total number in existence to calculate the percentage of the production run currently for sale on the secondary market. For the non-Koenigseggs, we sourced these data from Exclusive Car Registry.

Here are the results:

Koenigsegg Agera: 12.1% | Bugatti Chiron: 9.0 % | Pagani Huayra: 7.4% | McLaren Speedtail: 10.2%

Our ‘on-market’ range is from 7.4% to 12.1%, an average of 9.7%.

So, how does the Koenigsegg Regera compare? There are currently 17 Regera for sale worldwide, out of a total of 82 customer cars. This works out to a significant 20.7% of cars ‘on-market’, a full 11 points higher than the average of its competitors.

However, drawing any conclusions from these statistics alone would be premature. These statistics show that Regeras are being listed for sale with a higher incidence than competing models, but tell us nothing about how those Regeras being listed for sale are performing on the secondary market. The next section will explore this.

The last six months have seen twelve Regeras sell to new owners. Below is a list of each of these sales, noting the chassis number, the selling party, the new location of ownership, and the time on market. A gallery can be found at the end of the list.

10. #7218 sold by SuperVettura (Sunningdale, UK) to Hong Kong, subsequently listed by a dealer there. Time on market: N/A

11. #7151 sold by First Motors (Dubai, UAE) to Dubai, UAE. Time on Market: Approximately 9 months (on and off)

12. #7215 sold by SuperVettura (Sunningdale, UK) to Tangerang, Indonesia. Time on market: N/A

This shows us something critical for our analysis: Regeras sell and there is an active market for these cars, on both the buy side and sell side.

This should not be surprising, though. These cars are marvels of automotive engineering and provide an unrelenting power delivery with the Koenigsegg Direct Drive system that is unmatched by any other internal combustion car. At the last Ghost Squadron Owner’s Tour, nearly every owner present who owns more than one Koenigsegg opted to bring their Regera to the rally, speaking volumes to their appeal. Designed as a grand tourer, Regeras make great cars for distance driving, especially in contrast to the raw and aggressive Agera-series. The owner of #7197 put more than 15,000km (9350 miles) on their Regera over 3.5 years before listing it for sale to free up capital and space for a new addition to their collection.

There is an advantage to having such an active market. Many special hypercars (across all brands) are purchased by speculators (instead of enthusiasts) and tucked away in collections, never to see daylight again. These Regeras coming up for sale tip the scales, giving an opportunity for them to be acquired by enthusiasts who didn’t get a chance to buy them originally. Anecdotally, a friend and reader of Egg Registry did exactly this - he bought a Regera that the first owner never drove it, and it is now one of the most-driven examples out there! This Regera got a ‘second chance’, so-to-speak, and has since been driven and shared with Koenigseggs fans in multiple countries! As another example, a Regera sold earlier this year was driven and shared much more in the two months since its sale than it was for nearly two years with its first owner.

The above said, there is a staggering discrepancy in time-on-market between cars, and, more broadly, between regions. For example, there are three Regeras on the market in the United States sitting unsold for more than one year. One car in particular has been for sale for more than two years running, and is currently for sale with a non-factory-authorized ‘celebrity’ dealership in California. In contrast, SuperVettura (Koenigsegg UK) sold four units in six months this year.

We can hypothesize a few factors behind this, from the spec of the cars to the asking price to the dealerships involved. One thing is certain, though. There is a noticeable divide in sales success between dealerships that have experience selling Koenigseggs and those that have less experience. Many of the Regeras that are sitting for extended periods are for sale with dealerships in the United States whose sales teams have somewhat less Koenigsegg experience. As such, some of these cars are being priced at figures significantly out of touch with the current market and marketed to a client base not understanding of their impressive engineering and the holistic Koenigsegg ownership adventure. These newer dealerships simply don’t offer the ownership experience - from seamless servicing to exclusive events - that legacy dealers in Europe (such as Esser Automotive and SuperVettura) tend to provide.

The level of activity in the Regera market is remarkable. Recent sales (last ~6 months) and current listings sum to a total of 28 cars. This means that 34% of all Regeras have either transacted recently or are actively in search of a new owner. However, the frequency with which these cars sell indicate that this incidence is no cause for concern. The Koenigsegg brand is so strong and the cars are so desirable that, even with lots of owners selling, there is an enormous and healthy secondary market of buyers eager to join the Ghost Squadron.

In preparing for this article, we spoke with multiple Regera owners, all of whom seriously enjoy their car and have no plans of selling. Among their praises are the incredible acceleration and the impressive comfort the car provides - making it easy for long drives. Compared to other grand touring hypercars, the Bugatti Chiron being one example, the roof can be removed and stowed in the front, allowing owners to enjoy an open-air experience but remain prepared if the weather worsens. The performance speaks for itself - the car holds the 0-400-0 world record.

On the secondary market, Agera series Koenigseggs remain among the most sought after models, and owners tend to like them so much that they do not transact often. Though Regeras trade hands with a higher frequency than their predecessors, there are also 50% more Regeras out there than all Agera-series cars combined. While many Regeras remain with their original owner, the vast secondary market provides the opportunity for new collectors to get in on the action.

We are in an exciting period for Koenigsegg as a company. They have solidified themselves over the last decade as a major player in the ultra-high-end automotive space. The Agera, especially with the record-breaking Agera RS, placed them at the top of the food chain. Looking forward, Jesko deliveries are well underway and much-anticipated Gemera production will start next year in the brand-new Gripen Atelier. We will continue to watch the secondary market closely and are always excited when new people experience these incredible cars. Stay tuned for updates in 2024! Happy New Year!
