Koenigsegg Jesko sets lap record at Gotland Ring with a time of 2:56.97 - and it wasn’t really trying

Koenigsegg visited the Gotland Ring in September for marketing purposes to film the iconic CCGT alongside the Jesko as a way to promote the recently-transacted GT1-class race-car-that-never-raced. While they were there, they decided to let their test driver Niklas Lilja have a go at a fast lap around the circuit, using pump gas and only pushing to 90%.

Niklas and the Jesko Attack set a new lap record of 2:56.97, nearly 8 seconds faster than the Porsche GT3 RS MR, the previous record holder.

A few things are clear. First, for a fast lap that amounts to “why not give it a go?” to be breaking track records, this car is impressively quick. This is probably representative of the experience that a typical Jesko owner might have taking their car to their local track day. It will absolutely wipe the floor with every other road-legal car, assuming equal driver skill. The Jesko is just so capable.

Second, and more importantly for the history books, Koenigsegg needs to take the Jesko to some more famous tracks (Spa-Francorchamps, Nürburgring, Silverstone, etc.) to see how it stacks up. One of the factory test drivers, Markus Lundh, is on record saying it’s something they have a desire to do.

We wonder if any part of the recent track performance demonstrations Koenigsegg has done (this one, as well as the Regera at Ring Knutstorp in 2021) is an effort to shed the myth of Koenigseggs only being competent in a straight line that has been pervasive for years. This track performance seems to prove that couldn’t be further from the truth.

What is your reaction to this record? Where should Koenigsegg take the Jesko next? Let us know in the comments!
